Katherine Houghton "Kate" Beckett is an NYPD Captain in charge of the twelfth Precinct, after being promoted from homicide detective, and a former Federal government agent. Beckett is now the married woman of Richard Castle. She is portrayed by Stana Katic.

History

Katherine Houghton Beckett was born to Jim and Johanna Beckett on November 17, 1979. She was raised in Manhattan.

Her grandfather was an amateur magician and frequently brought her to the famous Drake's Magic Shop after school in her early on teens, resulting in her fascination of the fine art. She is also a comic book fan, having bought her first when she was 14 and envisioning herself as Elektra if she had a selection of what graphic symbol to exist. She was also raised past her father to exist a baseball fan.

Beckett went to Stuyvesant Loftier School, a public school in New York Metropolis reserved for highly gifted students. She then studied pre-law at Stanford, dreaming of becoming the first female Main Justice of the Supreme Court, before transferring to New York University later on her mother's death to pursue a career in constabulary enforcement. Betwixt her junior and senior yr of higher, she spent a semester studying in Kiev, Ukraine.

She hints to Castle many times virtually having a wild past and according to an old friend, Madison Queller, she was "the biggest scofflaw" in high schoolhouse and was in relationships with a multifariousness of men. She spent one summer while in high schoolhouse modeling as opposed to waitressing, eventually earning enough money to buy a 1994 Harley Softail Motorcycle, which she even so rides, although her father strongly disapproves of information technology and once fifty-fifty threatened to send her to a nunnery for. She also had a beauty queen, Debbie Winaker, for a roommate during her freshman yr.

Jim and Johanna Beckett, Kate's parents

On Jan nine, 1999, when she was 19, her mother, Johanna, was stabbed to death while on her style to meet with Jim and Kate for dinner. The detective in charge of the investigation, Detective John Raglan, was apparently never able to find the killer and attributed her decease to random gang violence. Kate, though, believes that at that place was more to her female parent'south murder than a random killing, thinking that the investigating detectives ignored every other evidence that could lead them to her mother's murderer.

Her male parent took Johanna's decease difficult and became an alcoholic. She was eventually able to help her begetter get through information technology, though. From then on, she has since worn her mother's nuptials ring as a cervix lace for "the life she lost" and her father's sentry, an Omega Speedmaster Professional, a.k.a. "Moonwatch", for "the life she saved".

On the other hand, her female parent's expiry inspired Beckett to become a cop: to be a detective that actually looks for justice for the sake of the victims' families for the correct reasons without 'pigeon-holing' crimes the way Detective Raglan did on her mother's example. Other than that, she besides wanted a position in the force where she could investigate her mother's decease further.

Richard Castle's books and the fictional shows Nebula ix and Temptation Lane as well apparently played their part in helping Kate get through her mother's death.

Beckett's training officeholder after leaving the academy was Mike Royce, who co-ordinate to Beckett was "the but one who understood the obsession that drove her." His stories and influence in her life subsequently led to her fall in love with him.

Beckett then became a detective for the New York Police Section, specifically the 12th Precinct Homicide Squad, where she works with boyfriend detectives Javier Esposito and Kevin Ryan, and medical examiner Lanie Parish, under Helm Roy Montgomery.

After spending the first three years of her career as a cop drowning herself in studying her female parent's file and coming upwards with zero, she finally decided to put it behind her and just endeavour to forget most it and avert delving deeper into the case. According to Captain Montgomery, her main strength as a detective lies in her ability to empathize with the relatives of fierce crimes, which she does better than anyone he knows.

At one point in her career, she teams up with FBI Agent Will Sorenson for a kidnapping case that did not end well. The ii become romantically involved, but the relationship ends when Will pursues a career in Boston, a career move he chose over Kate.

Beckett has Castle consult on the case, and though she tries to limit his access, he repeatedly violates police protocol. Although the killer is apparently caught when he leaves his fingerprints, on a note he allegedly sent to Castle, Castle convinces Beckett to continue the investigation based on a hunch. The two discover that the killer was actually Allison'due south blood brother, setting up a mentally ill client of his sis - a social worker - and then that he could claim the majority of their male parent's estate, due to his male parent suffering from last cancer. Past the end of the pilot, Castle uses his friendship with the Mayor to get partnered with Beckett, under the pretense of conducting enquiry for a new serial of novels, starring a detective based on Beckett. When Beckett'south learns that her literary modify-ego volition be named "Nikki Heat", she disapproves of the "stripper name" and asks Castle to change information technology, which he declines to do, and the title of his first book is also unveiled, 'Estrus Moving ridge', which has a sexual connotation to it.

In episode 9, Beckett's past is further revealed when a former love involvement, FBI Agent Will Sorenson, returns to New York and requests Beckett's assistance on a kidnapping case. Information technology is revealed in the episode past Sorenson that Beckett one time waited in line for an hour just to get one of Castle's books signed, and besides how his novels helped her through her mother's death. In the offset season finale, Beckett angrily refuses Castle'due south help in reopening her mother'due south murder investigation - having ended, after conducting her own investigations upon joining the force, that focusing on her mother'south death would destroy her life - stating that if Castle interferes, it will end his constabulary collaboration with her. Despite this, Castle confronts Beckett at the stop of the episode with evidence that her mother was targeted for murder.

At the beginning of season 2 she forgives Castle for his indiscretion well-nigh her mother's murder after he delivers a heartfelt amends. During this period it was also revealed that Beckett speaks Russian after a semester in Kiev between her junior and senior year, too as spending a brief menses modeling when she was seventeen on the grounds that information technology seemed easier than waitressing (although the but shown photo of her modeling menses is her in sports gear). Her partnership with Castle is later extended after Castle receives a 3-book publishing deal after the success of the debut Nikki Heat novel.

Beckett's mother's case is again brought upwards at Flavour 2 Episode 13 "Sucker Punch", when Lanie contacts Dr. Murray after realizing the wound similarities between the victim and Beckett'south female parent. Dr. Murray then reveals to Beckett that there is no doubt in his mind that the victim is killed past the same human that murdered her mother. At first, she is informed by a corrupt man of affairs, Dick Coonan, that it is a contract killer named "Rathborne" who killed her mother and the iii other victims. They and so set up an exchange - Castle actually donating $100,000 of his ain money to embrace the fee to fake a hit - so Beckett can finally catch the killer, but the killer never shows. After the exchange goes bust, she realizes that Coonan himself is the killer - given that he unsaid an awareness of her connexion to 'Rathborne' without Beckett having made any reference to her mother'southward death - and as she goes to

In the same episode, Castle states that he will terminate shadowing her and feels guilty that Beckett had to kill in lodge to save his life. However, Beckett tells him to stay, albeit that she has grown accepted to Castle "pulling on [her] pigtails," although she threatens to shoot him if he mentions that to anyone else, that he makes her hard job more fun, and that she wants him to be there when she finally finds whoever ordered her mother'due south murder.

The attraction between Demming and Beckett is firsthand and continues to abound in the next episode, Food to Dice For.  After a prominent chef is found expressionless in his restaurant kitchen, the owner is an old friend of Kate's from high school, Madison.  Much to Kate's dismay Castle and Madison go on a engagement, which is broken upwardly by Beckett's need to question her friend in the ongoing murder mystery.

Overkill opens with a Robbery Homicide which brings Demming into the fore front of the investigation splitting Kate between the two men and their theories on the investigation, ultimately both theories prove to exist the right one.

In a Deadly Game the season ii Finale, Castle is being abandoned by Alexis and Martha for his annual memorial twenty-four hours plans in the Hamptons.  He extends the invitation to Kate, who at first is taken ashamed, but agrees to think about it.  Throughout the investigation Castle drops hints about the weekend and Kate put him off.  It isn't until Castle overhears Kates plans to spend the weekend at the Jersey shore with Demming that he realizes that Beckett has made her option.  He decides that at present would be a good fourth dimension to cease their partnership.  Using his writing or lack there of as an excuse he decides to spend the entire summer away in the Hamptons at the completion of the example.  Esposito and Ryan make up one's mind to take a going away dinner at the twelfth for Castle.  Beckett realizes she wants Castle and ends her human relationship with Demming telling him that he'southward just not what she'south looking for.  Beckett decides she is going to tell Castle that she will join him for the weekend in the Hamptons, but before she tin can go what she needs out Castle's ex-married woman/publisher shows upwards to join Castle in his trip to the Hamptons.  When Kate asks if its for the weekend, she says no, the summer.  Stunned Kate asks if she volition see Castle in the fall...

When he asks why she will non show him a moving picture of the cycle, she says information technology is because she does not think he could handle the sight of her "straddling it in tight black leather. In "Terminal Call", she displayed her singing talents with the rest of her team.

Castle reacts similarly by placing his manus over hers.

In "Nikki Heat", Beckett allows Natalie Rhodes (Laura Prepon) to shadow her for inspiration.  Rhodes takes it one step further and  begins not just dressing like Kate, but acting exactly like her, scaring everyone at the 12th.  Rhodes takes her interim seriously and seduces Castle in the elevator engaging in a steamy kiss.  Equally the doors begin to close Kate sees the pair locked together and is obviously jealous.  It isn't until the post-obit morning we find out Castle turned her downward, to Kate'south relief. (Castle is currently in a human relationship with ex-wife Gina and Kate is with Josh)  Rhodes only wanted to slumber with Castle to gain insight on Jameson Rook, the male counterpart in the Nikki Oestrus series. Rhodes points out that Beckett and Castle are probably in love with each other but will not admit it, which pb to Castle using "verbal masturbation" (i.due east. inventing a steamy, concrete relationship betwixt the characters he based on Beckett and himself, Nikki Rut and Jameson Rook).

Castle and Beckett trapped inside a giant freezer

Equally the timer gets lower and lower, they grasp hands and share "a look", and as Castle pulls his heroic feat, Beckett looks at him with a ludicrously happy expression, and jumps on him in happiness. All Beckett can do in the function "party" is sing Castle's praises. At the cease of the episode, Castle says "I was thinking maybe... I should go domicile, become some rest.", quickly swerving away from the human relationship-changing statement as he spots Josh coming towards them. As Castle walks to the lift, Beckett and Josh comprehend, however, Beckett'southward eyes follow Castle until she can no longer come across him. In the elevator, Castle looks completely heartbroken; probably because considering the circumstances they had been in, and neither of them had managed to limited their truthful feelings.

In "The Dead Puddle", she is "courted" by another writer, Castle's protege, for information and characteristics. At the end of the episode, Castle admits openly to existence jealous, and she turns the writer downward, calling herself a "one writer girl". When Castle cheers her, she replies "always" and they share a charged moment earlier breaking abroad awkwardly.

In "An Embarrassment of Bitches", Castle visits Beckett with the victim's dog, because they agreed to have a "shared costody". Before leaving, he says that the dog loved when he rubbed him between his eyes. After that, he takes Beckett's paw and starts to gently draw circles with his thumb on it, to nowadays. While doing this for 7–viii seconds, in that location'south evidently a moment of "connectedness". However, a few seconds later, she interrupts. After that, Castle says: "Aye, there'due south... yous get information technology.", then both of them become very distracted.

In "Pandora/Linchpin", the duo are involved in a CIA operation with Castle's previous muse, Sophia Turner. Beckett's jealousy is clear throughout and she even declares "Sleep with whomever you want, the more the merrier" in a moment of frustration. Castle and Beckett survive yet another try on their lives and are grateful for each other's company.

In "47 Seconds", Beckett and Castle are talking about how pressuring this case is. she says: "It makes you lot think about all those things in your own life that you don't desire to put off anymore." Then she tries to say something, obviously something sensitive, judging from the sentence above, only Esposito steps into the room and interrupts. When Castle speaks with Martha, she tells him that he should tell Beckett how he feels, because "Nobody's tomorrow is guaranteed." When he tries to tell her how he feels, he gets interrupted. Some scenes after, she was trying to speak with Castle, probably nearly their conversation, simply he wasn't at that place, and they got a location of their prime number suspect. When Castle came back, Beckett was already in the interrogation room, and so Castle goes beyond the one-way mirror. During the interrogation Beckett unknowingly confesses that she "was shot in the breast and remember[s] every 2nd of information technology". Castle now knows that she heard him say "I love yous" the mean solar day she was shot and has been pretending not to know. Every bit a result of this, he begins to pull away from her, believing her lie about not remembering is her mode of rejecting him and doesn't feel the same style.

In "The Limey", now that Castle has distanced himself from her and is casually seeing Jacinda, Beckett hits back and agrees to drinks with Colin Hunt, a Detective Inspector from England. At the end of the episode, when the Inspector is virtually to leave, he asks Beckett out for a drink, merely she turns him down, while looking at Castle. Afterward the Inspector left, she would've talked to Castle about something important, but he tells Kate that he needs to see his girlfriend because she double-parked with his car. When Beckett tells Castle that she thinks the girlfriend'south not his type, he says: "She's fun, and she'due south simple. I think that's what my life needs now.", possibly referring to his previous statements about Beckett existence a complicated person. After Castle leaves, she calls the Inspector back about she's changed her mind about the potable.

In "Headhunters", the split between Castle and Beckett is getting greater. Despite this, Beckett still has Castle's back when he gets himself in trouble with a rogue gang cop, Detective Slaughter. She fifty-fifty risks her badge for him and declares "that'due south what partners are supposed to do", almost verbatim Castle'southward words on a like occasion previously.

"Undead Again " sees a restoration in the Castle/Beckett relationship. Castle implies that he knows she remembers everything nearly the shooting. When the suspect says he doesn't call up nearly the killing, they exit the room. Subsequently, Castle says to Beckett in the hospital: "When a life-altering moment occurs, people remember." She responds: "Maybe it's too big to deal with, maybe he can't only face information technology just jet. But he mayhap will, if he feels safe.", conspicuously talking well-nigh herself, judging from her former conversations with her psychologist.

Beckett besides tells Castle that she is "most where [she] wants to exist. [She] can feel the wall coming down and [she'd] like [him] to be at that place when information technology does". Castle agrees to stick effectually until she is fix.

Castle and Beckett finally getting together.

In "Always", as season 4 concludes, a instance sets Beckett on the trail of the man who shot her. Castle warns her that pursuing the human being will atomic number 82 to her decease, and the only reason she is still live is because he's made a deal with Montgomery's friend and the perpetrators. Reeling from his betrayal, and insisting that she volition continue the instance, Beckett causes Castle to declare he is 'washed' as he tin can't lookout her throw her life abroad, and they part means. Later, Beckett ends upwards confronting her shooter, which culminates in her hanging from a rooftop past her finger tips. She shouts for Castle to rescue her, despite their separation.

In one case rescued by Ryan and co operatives, she realizes what she wants. Since Castle is still non answering or returning her calls, she turns up at his loft in the middle of the nighttime and when Castle asks her, "Beckett, what do you want?", she responds by saying "You", earlier taking Castle in her arms and kissing him. She tells him, "I near died and all I could think about was you". Subsequently he looks at her for a moment, he pushes her upwardly confronting the wall and they share several passionate kisses before Beckett leads Castle to his bedroom past the hand.

Although the team are able to identify the human being behind Johanna Beckett's murder every bit Senator William Bracken, the lack of evidence confronting him afterward the destruction of Montgomery'due south quondam files forces Beckett to resort to bluffing him into leaving them lone past claiming that another copy of the files withal existed.

At the start of "Valkyrie", Beckett accepts both the new task in the Department of Justice and Castle's proposal, resulting in Castle spending some fourth dimension alternating between New York and Washington due to Beckett moving for the new job. Even so, although Beckett fabricated a positive impression on her colleagues for her investigative skills, she presently found herself unable to brand the necessary moral compromises for her new role, jeopardizing a programme to infiltrate a major offense syndicate to protect a immature adult female who would have been forced to act as the mole.

Beckett's initial relationship with Castle was strained, in role due to her viewing him equally immature and reckless. However, she did meet that he was important in solving difficult cases. After "Sucker Punch", nonetheless - which featured Castle willingly using $100,000 of his own coin simply to fake a contract to catch the human who killed her female parent, followed by him volunteering to terminate their partnership after his presence forced her to kill her mother'southward murderer, without learning who hired him - her human relationship with him has shown great improvement, as she can exist seen getting burgers with him after a case. Castle also has come to talk with her more about Alexis, including her wanting to buy a motorized scooter and her falling in love with a boy named Ashley.

Even Lanie comes right out and asks her how she feels about Castle'south "one that got away" and ends upwards shouting after her, "Honey, simply because you tin can't see what's going on, doesn't mean everybody else tin't encounter what'due south going on."

Nevertheless, they are soon rescued by Esposito and Ryan. After finding the bomb later, Castle and Beckett realize that it'south too late for a bomb squad. Holding hands, they await into each other's eyes and then with merely a second left, Castle yanks all the wires out, defusing the bomb as the timer hits 0:00. Relieved, he and Beckett hug. At the terminate of the 24-hour interval, Castle walks to the elevator, leaving Beckett and Josh to themselves. As Beckett is hugging Josh, she looks on at Castle until he's in the lift. Castle looks completely heartbroken at the fact that they faced certain death twice and nonetheless, neither i of them expressed their true feelings. In "The Dead Pool", she is "courted" by some other writer, Castle's protege, for information and characteristics. At the terminate of the episode, Castle openly admits to being jealous, causing her to turn down the writer calling herself a "one writer girl". When Castle thanks her, she replies "e'er".

In "Knockout", Beckett tells Castle he and she are "over" later his unsuccessful attempt to dissuade her from standing her obsessive pursuit of Hal Lockwood, an assassin continued to her mother'southward murder. While they fight Castle tells Beckett that he doesn't understand what their relationship is since they have "about died frozen in each other's arms, kissed each other, held easily, and spend their gratuitous time together, simply they never talk almost whatever of information technology". He also accuses her of "hiding" in relationships with men she doesn't love. While delivering a eulogy at Montgomery'south funeral, Castle sees in the distance the sun reflecting off what he realizes to be a sniper rifle that is aimed at Beckett. Before he tin can tackle her out of the way, Beckett is shot in the chest. Equally she's laying on the ground, Castle begs her to stay with him and confesses his beloved for her, telling her "I love you, Kate" before she passes out with tears in her optics.

Beckett survives her injury after undergoing extensive surgery and even flat lining. When Castle visits her, she claims to accept lost all memory of what happened and asks him to requite her some time to process everything. Withal, a "couple of days" turns into three months and she still doesn't call Castle during that time (thus putting this in a mirror situation to that of the previous yr when Castle didn't telephone call Beckett for the whole summer, exactly iii months as well and having the same result with Castle well-nigh furious with Kate for never contacting him). When she comes back to piece of work, she meets her new boss, onetime Internal Affairs member Victoria Gates, with whom she immediately has a confrontation later on she learns that the investigation into the assault on her, also as Montgomery's decease, has been airtight. She also learns that, while she was away, Ryan, Esposito and Castle got some information, and that a storage facility mayhap holding important information burned downward, plainly in an accident. She meets with Castle - who has left the precinct since Beckett isn't in that location - and tells him that she broke up with Josh during the summertime, and that she feels that she can't have an bodily human relationship while the people that had her mother killed are still complimentary. She attempts to go along the investigation of her female parent's decease, but Castle convinces her to try and give it some time, so that things may go clearer.

Beckett later confesses to her psychologist that she remembers everything upon getting shot, including Castle confessing his feelings for her, merely does not acknowledge this to anyone else. She refuses to pursue any relationship (including with Castle), until the human backside her mother and Roy Montgomery's deaths has been caught. In "Eye of the Beholder", Beckett is upset and becomes jealous when Castle becomes interested in another woman, Serena Kaye, but refuses to admit her feelings towards Castle, leading her psychologist to question whether she'due south worried that he won't look...or that he volition. Castle becomes worried about Beckett when they are working on a sniper example and realizes that she is suffering from PTSD from her shooting. He asks Esposito, who likewise once suffered from PTSD, to help her overcome it. To do so, Esposito has her hold the type of gun she was shot with and tells her that she has to make what happened a strength instead of a weakness. Later on, knowing that Castle was the one who talked Esposito into helping her, she thanks him.

In "47 Seconds", Martha encourages her son to tell Beckett how he feels; however, while Beckett is interrogating a suspect, she says "I was shot in the chest and I retrieve every 2nd of it", not knowing that Castle is in the ascertainment room and overheard it. Castle is stunned and obviously hurt that Beckett has been lying to him the entire time about non remembering anything. He tells Martha that since she never said anything, he believes that it must hateful that she doesn't feel the same way. Although Martha believes that he should terminate his partnership at present that he knows the truth, Castle decides to stay on the grounds that he wants to continue, as he wishes to experience he is doing something that matters. In "The Limey", Beckett and Lanie talk most Castle, leading Beckett to admit her feelings for him. Her endeavour to tell him well-nigh this (encouraged by Lanie) fails, though, every bit he appears with a flight attendant at the crime scene. Beckett is hurt, simply yet refuses to talk to him about this. In "Headhunters", Castle teams up with Detective Ethan Slaughter, clearly avoiding Beckett. She talks to her therapist almost this and he suggests that perchance Castle is non ready to wait for her anymore. Beckett is devastated to hear this and is therefore happy when Castle ends his brief partnership with Slaughter. In "Undead Once more", the instance Beckett and Castle are working on partly mirrors their ain problems such as ane witness claiming not to recall anything of a murder. In the end, Beckett tells Castle that she is seeing a therapist and is working on herself which causes the wall inside her to slowly come down. To this revelation, Castle says "I'd like to be there when information technology does" to which Beckett replies "Yeah, I'd like you lot to be there, too".

In the Season iv finale, "E'er", Beckett and Castle are forced to deal with their relationship when a murder they are investigating turns out to exist linked to Beckett'south shooting virtually a year before. Castle, trying to become Beckett off the case, tells her he loves her and admits that he heard her saying she remembered everything. She is, still, aroused that he hid important facts from her in gild to protect her and refuses to back off from the case, causing Castle to stop their partnership, refusing to see her throw her life away. Beckett is unable to resolve the instance this fourth dimension, though, and, in a nearly-decease feel, realizes how much Castle truly means to her. After she resigns from her task, Beckett visits Castle that night and, while telling him she is sad, shares a passionate kiss with him earlier they go to his bedroom hand in hand.

In the Season 5 premiere, "After the Storm", information technology is implied that Beckett and Castle have consummated their relationship when Castle wakes up into his bed to find a shirt-clad Beckett walking in his bedroom with morning coffee. They speak about their night, with Beckett asks Castle if he liked it, to which Castle replies with a yeah. They both agree that it was non a one fourth dimension thing and want to have a serious relationship, just their conversation is interrupted when Castle'due south mother comes dwelling, causing Beckett to sneak out of Castle's loft, then that Martha or Alexis don't encounter her. They must continue their relationship a undercover since, due to Precinct rules, coworkers are not allowed to become romantically or sexually involved or i of them must go re-assigned to a new partner or department. Only, fifty-fifty though Castle is not technically a police force officer, they both fearfulness Captain Gates will go by the rule anyway and may re-assign Beckett or possibly kick Castle out for good. So the 2 make up one's mind that, for the time existence, they will keep their relationship a hole-and-corner.

In the episode "Still", Beckett and Castle arrive at an flat of a suspected bomber, who escapes out the window into an alley, where he's immediately cornered by Ryan and Esposito.  Every bit he's ordered to lay on the ground, he holds out a remote that he sets to arm what is believed to be a flop.  When Esposito radios Beckett to articulate out of the apartment, Beckett steps on a flooring plate, setting the trigger of the flop.  To keep Beckett's mind off the predicament she's in, Castle distracts her with the argument of who was into who commencement.  The majority of the episode is a series of flashbacks proving each other's betoken.  As it'southward discovered the bomb also has a timer and volition detonate shortly, Beckett asks Castle to leave.  Every bit he's leaving, Becket calls out and tells him that she loves him, and he tells her that he loves her too.  This is the first time we hear Beckett say out loud that she loves Castle.  Castle soon returns, and with the help of Ryan & Esposito he and Beckett effigy out what the disarm lawmaking is for the bomb, and Beckett is saved.  Equally Castle and Beckett go out the apartment to the street, the two encompass, and just as they're about to kiss, a car pulls up with Ryan, Esposito and Captain Gates, who blitz upwards to them to show they're happy they made it out live.  Equally Esposito hugs Beckett, she quietly asks him if Gates saw her and Castle about to kiss, and before he can reply, Gates says she's glad that they're both OK, and she "didn't know too many men that would accept done what he (Castle) did" to stay with Beckett.  Equally Beckett agrees, Gates tells Beckett, "Oh for heaven's sake detective, merely kiss the man."  In shock, Beckett replies, "Sir, yous know?", and Gates says, "What, do you lot recollect I'm an idiot?  I needed to maintain plausible deniability, which I can continue, every bit long as y'all two both act professionally at the precinct."  Castle says he has no problem with that, only claims Beckett has a long history of coming on to him at piece of work, to which Beckett interrupts him, and tells Gates, "I don't think it'll be a problem sir."  So their relationship is at present out in the open.
